I see no reason why we can't use the purchase ledger to post "Not yet paid" disbursements to the matter ledgers. What I do now is post them to a nominal, then post an office payment changing the office bank to my contra nominal.

Would any other users find this useful.

I think that it would benefit personal injury practices for medical fees and counsel fees. It is also useful when you are using a Credit Card to make payment for say Bankruptcy Searches or Coal Mining Searches.
